HOW DOES CHIROPRACTIC WORK?
Chiropractic treatments mainly consist of gentle manipulative techniques, these are known as adjustments. These adjustments restore mobility, function and alignment to the joints helping to alleviate pain.
Chiropractors get your body to function better so that it can heal itself!
IS CHIROPRACTIC SAFE?
Yes. Chiropractic has far fewer risks than many other treatments, including anti-inflammatory medication and surgery.
We will, of course, be happy to discuss any concerns you have regarding treatment.
WHAT HAPPENS AT MY FIRST VISIT?
Your first visit will normally last approximately 45 minutes and during that appointment your Chiropractor will take a full medical history and other information regarding your presenting symptoms and lifestyle.
They will then perform a thorough physical, orthopaedic and neurological examination and take x-rays if necessary.
If Chiropractic care is deemed not to be suitable for you then we can refer you to another relevant health professional.
WILL I GET TREATMENT ON MY FIRST VISIT?
It is our policy that we do not treat on your first visit as after the examination it is important to review the findings and x-rays (if taken) to ensure that the correct diagnosis is made and the best treatment plan is given. We don't want to rush in to treatment and miss something. We don't want to risk your health or our reputation.
WILL THE TREATMENT HURT?
Manipulation, when carried out by a qualified practitioner, is not generally painful. You may feel some gentle pushing or pulling. If you have acute muscle spasm or inflammation there may be some discomfort. Some people may experience some soreness tiredness after their first few treatments.
This is because your Chiropractor will be moving joints which may have been tight for some years. The symptoms are due to mild inflammatory reactions from your body. This is your natural defence system protecting you from something that you are not normally used to.
Your Chiropractor will advise on things you can do to reduce any soreness. Once you have had a few treatments, your body will get used to them and you start to heal.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET BETTER, HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
Your recovery is dependent on many factors – your presenting problem, the length of time you have had it, your fitness levels, your age and your own attitude and commitment to name just a few!
Don't worry, at your second visit your Chiropractor will tell you how many treatments you are likely to need, the frequency and over how long.
IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO GET BETTER QUICKER?
YES! Your Chiropractor will give you advice at your Report of Findings about the things that you can do at home or work to aid your recovery.
Your Chiropractor will also recommend stretching or strengthening exercises for you to do at different stages throughout your treatment plan. These are vital for your recovery.
Do take our advice seriously, we have dealt with thousands of patients and we know what works.
WILL THE CHIROPRACTOR CLICK MY BACK OR NECK?
Chiropractors have many different adjusting techniques they can use to restore the movement to your joints.
Some methods involve the joints making a clicking/popping sound. If you do not want us to use these techniques then please do let us know.
There are many other techniques that chiropractors are skilled in that do not make these noises.
WHAT IS THE CLICKING/POPPING NOISE OF THE ADJUSTMENT?
The popping sound that is sometimes caused during a chiropractic adjustment is simply gas being released from the joint as movement is restored.
Whether there is a “pop” or not, and how loud it is, varies from day to day and between patients. There doesn't always need to be a noise for the adjustment to work as long as the movement is restored.
Whilst some people enjoy the feeling of the adjustment and noises, others are not so keen. We will work with you to determine the best techniques to assist you whilst also ensuring that you are comfortable with how we do it.
WILL I NEED X-RAYS?
This depends on your presenting problem, examination results and medical history.
All Chiropractors and medical professionals abide by the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IRMER) when making clinical decisions on whether to x-ray patients.
Your Chiropractor may decide that it is necessary to take x-rays before treating you. This will give them more information about you so that they can make better clinical decisions regarding the best treatment for you.
WHAT IS THE REPORT OF FINDINGS (ROF)?
This is what the second visit is all about. We recommend that you bring somebody close to you to this appointment as we give you a lot of information during the ROF and it is useful to have a second pair of ears to help you remember everything.
During this appointment the Chiropractor will explain, in understandable detail, the examination and x-ray findings (if taken), the diagnosis, the treatment plan and prognosis and any lifestyle changes that need to be addressed.
It is at the end of this appointment, once you are fully informed, that you will receive your first Chiropractic treatment.
ONCE I START SEEING A CHIROPRACTOR DO I HAVE TO GO FOREVER?
We believe chiropractic, like many healthy lifestyle choices such as exercise and eating well, is one of those things that is best done throughout life, but we understand that everyone has different goals.
People visit the Dentist for regular check ups to prevent problems occurring or to catch any problems early. This should be the case for your spine too. The nerves that come from your spine (spinal cord) control the whole of your body and it is essential that these are functioning correctly. Regular check ups (like visiting the Dentist) will help to prevent problems developing into something that will affect your everyday lifestyle.
At Goddard Chiropractic we are committed to working with you to understand YOUR individual needs and wishes.
Everyone is different and we pride ourselves on being flexible enough to meet your needs. Some people want a specific problem dealt with and then choose to cease care.
Others choose to nurture their health long term and incorporate ongoing chiropractic health care in to their lifestyle. In essence at Goddard Chiropractic it's all about choice, and that means you continue chiropractic care for as long as you want to enjoy the benefits.
Whatever you choose, we are here to help you and make your experience as beneficial as possible.
